Behind the counter is Stephanie Richter, who spent more than 30 years in Las Vegas gaming hospitality before leaving the corporate side in 2023 and partnering on projects including the historic Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings. She grew Mama Tess's out of food she had been making for people close to her long before it had a storefront.
"I wanted to tap into a sense of nostalgia at Mama Tess's," Richter said, describing the sandwiches, soups, salads and handcrafted milkshakes now on the menu. The stated goal is a spot families can walk into on a Tuesday, not one reserved for special occasions.
A few minutes away, Tuscan Cove Bar & Patio opened in February inside the Tuscan Highlands gated community at 12656 Southern Highlands Pkwy. It is a partnership between Steven Kennedy of All In Hospitality, who runs the room and bar program, and Executive Chef Ricardo Romo. The kitchen turns out stone-fired pizza, burgers and Sunday brunch, with happy hour running daily from 4 to 6 p.m.

None of this amounts to Southern Highlands becoming a dining destination overnight. Distill has poured pints in the neighborhood for years, and the Parkway has never been empty. One made itself impossible to miss from the street. The other made itself easy to reach once you know where to look.
